Maldon is designated as "Australia's First Notable Town" noteworthy for its 19th-century appearance, maintained since gold-rush days. In December 1853, gold was discovered and Maldon became a part of the Victorian Gold Rush.  The goldfield,  named "Tarrengower Fields" after Mount Tarrengower had within a month 3000 miners, by the 1861 census Maldon, as the town was now known had a population of 3341 residents servicing 5000-6000 miners and was the eighth largest town in Victoria. Maldon proved to be one of Victoria's richest quartz-mining centres, with over seventy reefs proven to contain gold deposits.
